Historical background on NORWAY Mission

Following the banning of the African National Congress (ANC) as an illegal organization on 8 April 1960, The ANC operated underground. The ANC functioned internally as an underground organization and externally as an overseas organization. Oliver Tambo was sent overseas as the ANC acting president general and head of the external mission. External missions were opened in London, Accra, Cairo, and Dar-es-Salaam. Eventually the ANC had offices and representatives in 32 countries by 1980. The external missions worked to win support for the overthrow of apartheid by promoting the cause of the ANC and urging international economic pressure against the South African government.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the ANC mission in Oslo, Norway consist of 4 series: Correspondence, Minutes, Newsclippings, and Subject Files.

The Correspondence series (.2 linear meters) consists of letters, memos, and faxes spanning the years 1986 to 1994. These documents were sent and received between the Norway Mission, other ANC offices and missions, particularly those of the other Nordic countries, and other supportive organisations. Document topics include repatriation of ANC cadres, business matters, condolences, and planning for meetings, trips and conferences. Of particular interest is an unsigned copy of the letter sent to Nelson Mandela from the Norwegian Nobel Committee announcing his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Minutes series (.2 linear meters) consists of meeting minutes of the Fellesrådet for det sørlige Afrika (FsA) – the Norwegian Council for Southern Africa. Almost all materials are in Norwegian. These records span the years 1986-1993.

The Newsclippings series (.74 linear meters) is a subject file of sorts, comprised of clippings from various countries, including South Africa, Norway, and France. They have been kept in their original categories and order, with some folders pertaining to specific topics, and others containing articles on miscellaneous topics. Some of these include elections, violence, kidnapping attempts, and Chris Hani’s status as an up-and-coming “Young Lion” ready to challenge Mandela’s position. Of particular interest are the numerous French articles, found in the “Newsclippings – General” folders, concerning the assassination of Dulcie September in Paris.

The Periodicals series (.54 linear meters) includes press statements, newsletters and magazines published by the ANC, the ANC Youth League, ANC Cultural Workers, the International Defence and Aid Fund (IDAF), and the South African Communist Party (SACP), among others. Of particular note is the extensive collection of Mayibuye. All materials were published between 1980 and 1994.

The Subject Files series (1.9 linear meters) includes documents from 1983-1995 (with one item from 1955) in both English and Norwegian. The original categories and order have been kept, and there is overlap with both the Correspondence and Periodicals Sub -series. Topics of these records include planning for events and conferences in South Africa and Norway, various ANC departments and sections, political prisoners in South Africa, and social and political organisations. There are also extensive documents concerning the oil embargo against South Africa and ANC projects and project proposals.
