Historical background on SOMAFCO Heath Department

SOMAFCO community like any given society needed a structure that would attend to the health care of its people. The population of the complex was rapidly expanding
because of opposition to apartheid in South Africa that resulted in people into exile.
Some of these people were either jailed and tortured and needed some kind of treatment. Other who were already at Mazimbu, were faced diseases that were unfamiliar to them. It became necessary, therefore, that an organization of health care was needed. Thus, in late 70s a clinic was set up for such a purpose. However, there was lack of adequate facilities and personnel to cope with the growing population of the complex. The situation changed with later construction of ANC\Holland Hospital in May 1984. This construction was made possible with support of Medisch Kommittee Angola from
Netherlands. It was better equipped, utilized for curative, preventative and maternal and child health services as well as health education for the community.
