Historical background on SOMAFCO Project Management Department

During its years in exile, the ANC Diaspora had been democratically organized for the formulation of policy guidelines on constitutional matters, education, culture, etc.
Huge settlements were established with comprehensive facilities for its exiled members. A large range of projects providing educational, training, health, agricultural and cultural facilities were set up for purposes of self-reliance and in preparation for a liberated South Africa.

The Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College SOMAFCO) encompassed in Mazimbu Complex began in 1977 and the ANC Dakawa Development Centre began its existence in 1982. Both settlements provided varied facilities and cater for those from infancy to old age and produced food, furniture, clothing, leather goods and other items.

Scope and Content Note

The Projects Management Department collection is comprised of 3. linear metres and series: Correspondence, Donors and Subject Files.

The Correspondence series spans the years 1981-1992. It documents the
interactions within the ANC officials on the projects.

The Donors series spans the year 1990. The ANC had organized a huge
International Donor Conference held at Arusha, Tanzania, for the support of its projects in exile. The series contains information of the relevant issues discussed and the resolutions that were taken by the participants who came from all over the world.

The Subject Files series spans the years 1977-1991. The files reflect various
topics about the projects, particularly between SOMAFCO and Dakawa. There were also various organizations, which played important role in meeting the needs and wants of the ANC.
