Historical background on SOMAFCO Zonal Political Committee

The Zonal Political Committee came into office in January 1988 long after the other zones, i.e. Dar-Es-Salaam and Dakawa had had their ZPCs functioning. The political life of the zone was virtually based in the hands of Administration, Women Section, Youth Section and Partly Works Committee. These were political organs, which kept the life going in the zone. As early as 1986, a call was made by the community and ANC Headquarters for the formation of an organ in the region to play a role in the advancement of the struggle. This move brought about the Mazimbu Zonal Political Committee, which later paved way for the formation of Regional Political Committee.

Scope and Content Note

The Zonal Political Committee is comprised of .6 linear meters and two series: Correspondence and Subject Files.

The Correspondence series spans the years 1985-1991. The series reflects the political life in the settlements of Mazimbu and Dakawa. Also reflected in it are relations with the local people.

The Subject Files series spans the years 1982-1991. The files document a variety of activities pursuit by the ZPC. The events are clearly shown through reports on the real functions of the ZPC. The other area of importance is a file on political discussions, which was the core activity of the ZPC. All was not well concerning required active participation of members in the deliberations of the ZPC. Problems relating to this are also recorded in this series.
