Historical background on Washington Mission Records

Though the Washington mission’s papers provide a particularly Washington-specific set of papers (including a flood of varied and far-flung publications most likely given to the mission as unsolicited gifts), there is still a predominantly home-focused theme to the collection. Regular correspondence mentions events in South Africa rather than in Washington, and the Administrative series carries a strong presence of crucial South African documents, which were copied and placed in the Washington office from other missions. The series have generally been arranged in the manner in which they were maintained by the office. As such, researchers will encounter some overlap between the series. The Subject Files in particular relate to material within other series.

Some files focus on specifically North American events, such as the Mandela Tours of 1990 and 1993. Also available are records of the United States government’s interaction with the ANC, correspondence between the Mission and interested United States citizens, and files on Foundations and Corporations doing business with the ANC and South African businesses.

Scope and Content Note

The records are arranged in eleven series: Administrative, Correspondence, Fund-raising Individuals, Mandela Tours, Missions, Organizations, Photographs, Subject Files.
The Administrative series I (150 cm) deals with business matters of the mission including the filing of important organisation-wide articles such as speeches by key leaders, notes by committees such as the Constitutional Committee, and crucial defining documents such as the Freedom Charter, the Harare Declaration, and the ANC Programme of Action. Events, public statements, policy guidelines and miscellaneous business matters are also available in this series. This series has some overlap with the Subject Files series and researchers are advised to consult both series for certain topics.

The Correspondence Series II (40 cm) includes correspondence with some celebrities with ties to the ANC, contact between the home office in Lusaka and the Washington Mission, and, the most prevalent topic, logistical planning on the administration of funding, travel for members, and arrangement of high level event planning, such as the visits by Mandela in 1990 and 1993. Further material on these visits can be found in the series Mandela Tours.

The Fundraising Series III (10 cm) is arranged according to the organisation providing the funding. Documentation primarily consists of letters to and from the donors, and occasionally includes letters of introduction or brief background on the ANC to encourage support.

The Individuals Series IV (50 cm) varies widely from individuals central to the ANC such as Nelson Mandela and Chris Hani to relatively remote individuals worldwide whose connection to the movement is more distant, such as North American celebrities Stevie Wonder and Spike Lee. All varieties of material occur here, including some photographs, contracts, handwritten letters of support, and faxes notifying members of upcoming meetings.

The Mandela Tours Series V (30 cm) is divided into two sub-series named for the years in which the tours took place. Two major trips to the United States were made by Nelson Mandela, one in 1990 and the other in 1993. Cities, universities and government officials of the United States have left traces here of the wide ranging influence of the ANC and South African political affairs at large on the consciousness of the United States. This is evident in the excited letters, faxes, announcements and meeting notes that surround the two visits. Also recorded here is the grassroots support at the citizen level, such as the Kansas Anti-Apartheid Coalition. Some additional material on these tours is located in the Correspondence series.

The Missions & Organizations Series VI (15 cm) is dedicated to the materials of ANC offices distributed around the globe. Largely represented are interactions from American agencies, companies, and social groups, and universities inviting chief representative Mabuza to a variety of speaking engagement invitations, conferring various honors on ANC leaders, and seeking advice and research assistance from the ANC through the Washington office. Also occurring is a series of communications between other offices and the Washington office, such as a January 22, 1991 announcement to all Chief Representatives of the intention of opening a Denmark Mission.
Organizations Sub-Series (60 cm). Representing a wide variety of organisations, this sub-series deals primarily with those organisations that dealt directly with the ANC itself, and therefore have through the process of ordinary business passed papers of their own offices to the Washington office.

The Photographs Series VII (18 cm) contains a variety of photographs of people and places related to the anti-apartheid cause, ranging from posed portraits of the most famous ANC members to candid snapshots of South Africa’s ordinary citizens in their home neighborhoods. Some photographs are also located in the Individuals series.

Subject Files Series VIII (330cm). A broad representation of countries, conferences, and third party (usually ANC) writings on various organisations (as opposed to papers directly passed from organisations to the ANC during regular communication and business, which occur in the Organisations series.) The Subject Files span a wide array of topics ranging from South African topics to American issues. Material in this series often overlaps with documentation in the earlier series.
