Historical background on Zimbabwe Mission

When the Nationalist Government banned the African National Congress (ANC) on 8 April 1960, the ANC began operating underground in South Africa. Outside the country the ANC started to establish itself as the official voice of South Africa’s voteless masses. By the 1970s recognition of the ANC’s legitimacy was growing, not only amongst the multiplicity of non-governmental anti-apartheid organizations, but also among foreign governments.

The first missions were opened in London, Accra, Cairo, and Dar-es-Salaam. By 1980, the ANC had offices and representatives in 32 countries. The external missions worked to win support for the overthrow of apartheid by promoting the cause of the ANC and urging international economic pressure against the South African government. The missions also provided assistance to South African exiles. Following the banning of the organization, Oliver Tambo, President General of the ANC left South Africa to head of the ANC’s external operations.

On 2 February 1990 the bans on the ANC and other political organizations were lifted. A process of negotiations between the unbanned organizations and the South African government ensued. In 1992 the ANC instructed its missions to collate and box their records for shipment to South Africa. These records were to form the basis of the official archives of the ANC, from which a true history of the ANC’s role in the struggle against apartheid could be written.

Scope and Content Note

The Zimbabwe Mission papers of the African National Congress are stored in 12 boxes containing 144 folders.
The papers are divided into 4 series: Correspondence, Subject Files, Publications and Photographs

Themes highlighted throughout the series include Chris Hani, his role in the ANC and his martyrdom, the South African Communist Party (SACP), both the organization and individual members, and finally the symbiotic relationship between the government of Zimbabwe and the ANC, with regards to exiles, conferences and tours.
The Correspondence Series I (10 cm) is arranged alphabetically by subject or department/individual. It covers the period between 1987-1994. The materials include telexes, faxes, cards and letters, amongst others. Of particular note is a string of correspondence between the ANC and the government of Zimbabwe.

The Subject Files Series II (45 cm) contains various material on individuals, events, and organizations, which were collected by the ANC Zimbabwe miss Chris Hani, as well as documents pertaining to the SACP. This series also contains papers, reports, and other documents pertaining to the events held in Harare, such as the Harare Communique and the Harare Church Summit.

The Publications Series III (56 cm) demonstrates the many focuses of the mission in Zimbabwe, with journals, bulletins, reports, pamphlets, and newsclippings pertaining to a variety of issues, from Anti-Apartheid to human rights and from democratic movements to communism. It is arranged alphabetically by title. The bulk of the series spans the period from 1984 to 1993, although there is one pamphlet, ANC Struggle – Historical Background, published in 1963.

The Photographs Series IV (10 cm) illustrates various aspects of the ANC and the Anti-Apartheid struggle. A large portion of the photographs document various rallies organised by missions other than Zimbabwe. Of particular note are materials regarding several rallies held in London and other cities within the United Kingdom, such as a Free Mandela Campaign in London and an Anti-Apartheid rally in Leicestershire. Another strength of the series is its portraits of various leaders of the ANC, including Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and Elias Motswaledi, amongst others.
